Why Adult Education at All Soul’s Church?

1.       Answers for ourselves and the watching world

Our lives are complicated.  There are daily challenges and questions that arise when trying to live as followers of Jesus.  Through our adult education we try to bring our faith to bear on the questions of our day. We believe deeply in faith seeking understanding.  We listen to the questions about God that arise from the culture and from our hearts.  We search the scriptures and the historic teachings of the church trusting in the Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth[1]

2.      Growth in knowledge, virtue, & mission

Christianity does not know the sharp distinction between knowing and doing. A healthy church has members that live their faith in the homes and communities. Adult education encourages and supports personal, public, and familial devotion to Christ. We try to keep the three arenas at the forefront of our planning We want to learn about our faith so that we can better reflect God in the world.  This helps us to be better mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, and faithful members of society.  By knowing our faith we are kept from false teachings that would prevent us from being all God created us to be. [2]

[1] in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect…(1 Peter 3:15 ESV)

[2]For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:5-8 ESV) “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes” (Ephesians 4:11–15 ESV)
